Grass growing 2nd grade- Students would decorate a cup and fill the cup with soil and grass seeds. They would then water and monitor the grass as it grows. This will teach the students about what grass needs to grow, and give them the responsibility of providing those items for the grass.
Sound mobile 2nd grade- Students will create a mobile using a hanger, string, and metal items. they will cut the string to different lengths and tie the metal objects to both the hanger and the objects. When the objects are struck with different objects they will create sound. Using different materials to strike the objects will show students how sound differs. The larger the object the bigger sound it will make.
Taco Sauce Penny cleaner- Collect tarnished pennies to begin with. Students will place the pennies on a flat surface ( preferably a plate that can be thrown away). The teacher would then cover the pennies in taco sauce and the students would rub the pennies with the taco sauce. Allow the taco sauce to sit on the pennies for two minutes and rinse the pennies off. End the experiment here and it can be used for lower grades (second, third).
To make the experiment more higher level, find out which ingredients work best to clean the pennies..
Place two or three equally tarnished pennies on each of four plates. Use masking tape or a sticky note to mark each plate with the ingredient you are testing (vinegar, tomato paste, salt, and water).
Cover the pennies with the various ingredients and allow them to sit for at least two minutes.
Rinse the pennies from each test plate with water.
